Edgar Earl “Ed” McCanless
Ed was an accomplished engineer who spent over 25 years at IBM San Jose, earning numerous awards and serving as a pioneering LGBT leader at work and in his community. He helped lead efforts in the early 1990s that resulted in IBM’s groundbreaking domestic partner benefits, diversity training, and inclusive policies—changes that influenced workplaces nationwide.
Beyond IBM, Ed served as President of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Awareness Program, fostering understanding and dialogue with students across the Bay Area, and volunteered at the Billy DeFrank LGBT Center in San Jose.
An avid swimmer, cyclist, and lover of the arts and outdoors, Ed found joy in places like Yosemite and performances by local cultural organizations. He passed away on July 11, 2024, and through his will, made a legacy donation to ACDA in honor of his longtime friend, Board and Lifetime Member Sandi Scheuber.
